The Yasawa Saints made history by winning the inaugural Sports Well League Tag Championship, defeating Umina Bunnies 16-12 in a thrilling final held at Churchill Park in Lautoka. This event, which took place over two days, was significant as it focused solely on women’s league tag, showcasing the growing interest and participation of women in this sport.
The Umina Bunnies, who traveled from northern Sydney as the only overseas team, added an exciting competitive spirit to the tournament, which also included local teams like the Nadi Eels and VT Bears. Jone Wesele, the Muaira State Development Officer, emphasized the importance of this tournament in promoting gender inclusivity in sports, stating that it serves to empower women and inspire them to participate.
“This program is designed to empower women and encourage their involvement in sports,” Wesele remarked.
The championship has not only crowned the Yasawa Saints as its first champions but has also established a vital platform for the growth of women’s rugby league in Fiji, fostering international connections and encouraging more women to take part in sporting activities.
This event marks a hopeful stride towards greater representation and inclusivity in sports, with initiatives that spotlight women’s achievements and encourage further participation. The enthusiasm from this tournament sets a promising precedent for future events in women’s sports, ultimately fostering a more equitable environment within the competitive realm.
