The Yasawa Saints have made history by winning the inaugural Sports Well League Tag Championship, edging out the Umina Bunnies 16-12 in a thrilling final held at Churchill Park in Lautoka. This event is particularly significant as it exclusively featured women’s league tag competition, highlighting the growing interest and participation of women in the sport.
The Umina Bunnies, hailing from northern Sydney, were the sole international team taking part in this two-day tournament. Four teams competed overall: Yasawa Saints, Nadi Eels, VT Bears, and the Umina Bunnies. The Yasawa Saints’ victory not only crowns them as the first champions of this new initiative but also paves the way for future women’s leagues in Fiji.
Jone Wesele, the Muaira State Development Officer, emphasized the importance of the tournament in fostering gender inclusivity in sports. He noted that traditionally, many sports events have mainly involved male participants.
