The Yasawa Saints made history by winning the inaugural Sports Well League Tag Championship, edging out the Umina Bunnies with a score of 16-12 in a thrilling final held at Churchill Park, Lautoka. This competition, which highlighted women’s league tag, saw the Umina Bunnies travel from northern Sydney as the only international team participating in the two-day event.
Four teams took part: Yasawa Saints, Nadi Eels, VT Bears, and the overseas-based Umina Bunnies. The tournament marks a significant step forward for women’s involvement in sports, with the Yasawa Saints becoming the first champions of this groundbreaking league.
Jone Wesele, the Muaira State Development Officer, emphasized the importance of the event in promoting gender inclusivity within sports. Wesele stated, “Many times, sports events only involve men, so this programme is designed to empower women and encourage their participation in the sport. It motivates women to step forward and be involved.”
The inaugural Sports Well League Tag Championship has laid a solid foundation for the advancement of women’s rugby league in Fiji, promoting empowerment and fostering international connections.
This event not only celebrates the achievements of the Yasawa Saints but also paves the way for increased visibility and viability of women’s sports in the region. With continued efforts to support and encourage female athletes, the future looks bright for women’s league tag.
