The Grand Pacific Hotel (GPH) in Suva has stepped up to illuminate its iconic façade in vibrant orange and blue in recognition of World Cancer Day, joining a global initiative led by the Union for International Cancer Control. This lighting display, held in partnership with the Fiji Cancer Society, is part of the annual observance on February 4 that seeks to raise awareness about cancer prevention, early detection, treatment, and care.

Doreen Huon, the cluster director of Sales & Marketing for IHG Hotels & Resorts, emphasized the importance of such initiatives, stating, “Landmark lighting provides a powerful way to make cancer awareness visible within our community.” She noted that through efforts like the landmark lighting and the Cup of Kindness initiative, the hotel is able to support the Fiji Cancer Society while involving guests and staff in meaningful causes.

In addition to the landmark lighting, the FNPF-owned IHG Hotels in Fiji have shown their commitment through the Cup of Kindness, a monthly initiative at InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort and Spa, Grand Pacific Hotel Suva, and Holiday Inn Suva. This program donates 100 percent of proceeds from selected coffee sales to local organizations benefiting the community. The two Cup of Kindness events held in January and February aim to raise approximately $5,000 to support the Fiji Cancer Society’s education, awareness, and patient support programs across the islands.

Lachlan Walker, the regional general manager for IHG Hotels & Resorts in Fiji and Pacific, highlighted the significance of partnering with organizations that provide crucial health services and awareness programs through these fundraising initiatives. He remarked on the hotels’ responsibility to contribute positively to the local community, given their ownership by the Fiji National Provident Fund (FNPF).

Belinda Chan, the chief executive officer of the Fiji Cancer Society, expressed gratitude for the ongoing partnership, highlighting that participation in global initiatives like World Cancer Day elevates cancer awareness at both national and international levels. She stated that the support from FNPF-owned IHG Hotels strengthens education efforts, encourages early detection, and provides important support to those affected by cancer.

The GPH began participating in the landmark lighting initiative in 2022 and has maintained its involvement each year, showcasing a steadfast commitment to standing in solidarity with individuals impacted by cancer. This ongoing dedication not only aids in raising awareness but also fosters a sense of community and support among those facing the challenges of cancer.
