Ratu Meli Saubulinayau, chairman of the Lau Provincial Council, has voiced strong concerns regarding the expulsion of individuals involved in drug-related activities, asserting that such measures merely displace the issue rather than resolve it. As various villages within several provinces resort to banning those caught up in drug use, Ratu Meli suggests this strategy overlooks the underlying causes of addiction.
The chairman criticized the practice, stating, “From my end, that is not the solution. By disowning someone, you are just moving the problem from your village to another.” He emphasized that effective solutions lie in treatment, understanding, and supporting those affected by addiction rather than excluding them.
Ratu Meli pointed out that a lack of care and emotional support often drives individuals toward substance abuse. “We need to get that person treated and find out why they went into drugs in the first place,” he explained. He identified love and responsibility as critical elements that many communities are failing to uphold, which ultimately can lead to individuals being ostracized without any real resolution to their issues.
Moreover, he indicated that communities have increasingly prioritized financial and material concerns over interpersonal relationships and social obligations, which can exacerbate the challenges faced by individuals struggling with drug use. “That is why people are being chased out without the problem actually being solved,” Ratu Meli lamented.
In a bid to foster healthier environments, he urged communities to embrace compassionate and constructive measures to combat the cycle of drug abuse, advocating for programs that focus on healing and support rather than exclusion. This approach, he believes, will not only help individuals in need but also strengthen community bonds and promote overall well-being.
