Residents of Lautoka living near the Waiyavi waterfall have been urged to actively report any instances of littering in the area. The waterfall has become a significant health risk for swimmers due to illegal dumping by individuals and businesses.
Shalend Singh, head of services for the Lautoka City Council, revealed that a truck was recently apprehended while unlawfully disposing of waste at the site. “It is a bit challenging as people dump at odd hours,” Singh commented, highlighting the ongoing difficulties in tackling this problem.
The council has previously imposed fines on some offenders caught in the act and is now rallying support from local residents. They are encouraged to keep an eye out for littering activities, particularly during late or unusual hours, to help maintain the environmental integrity of the popular swimming spot.
This community-driven approach aims to protect the natural beauty and safety of the waterfall, while fostering a sense of responsibility among residents to preserve their local environment. By coming together, Lautoka residents can play a vital role in curbing these harmful practices.
