Road fatalities and incidents of drunk driving have emerged as the most prevalent offences in the Western Division, with law enforcement officers themselves being implicated in some cases. This concerning trend was addressed by Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Kasiano Vusonilawe, during an interview with FBC News. He emphasized that the police have heightened their presence on the roads, particularly focusing on enforcing measures against drunk driving.
Despite numerous warnings, a portion of the public continues to flout the laws, which has necessitated the implementation of random breath-testing operations. These initiatives have successfully led to a notable number of arrests and subsequent court charges for drink-driving offenders.
“My plea to the people is to work within the law and adhere to the regulations of this country,” Vusonilawe stated. He stressed the importance of understanding that violations will not go unnoticed, declaring that the police are well-equipped and ready to act.
Additionally, Vusonilawe urged the community to refrain from criminal activities, especially during the festive season, indicating that the police have devised specific strategies to manage such challenges. However, he refrained from disclosing detailed information about these strategies.
This heightened commitment from the police to enforce the law underlines the ongoing efforts to promote road safety and discourage dangerous behaviors, particularly during a time traditionally associated with increased travel and festivities.
