The West Secondary Schools Rugby League quarter-finals for the Under-15 and Under-17 grades will be played this Saturday at Govind Park and the Xavier College Grounds, Ba/Tavua/Ra zone coordinator David Wise confirmed on Wednesday. The move advances the western zone’s pathway to the national secondary schools quarter-finals in Suva on April 11.

Three western schools have already secured places in the national quarter-finals after the opening round-robin matches: Ba Provincial High School, Ra High School and Ba Methodist High School. Wise said those schools collected enough points early in the series to guarantee their spots, while the fourth western qualifier will be decided after the final round-robin games in two weeks’ time.

“For the U15 and U17 grades, whoever wins will qualify for the national quarter-finals in Suva on April 11,” Wise said, stressing the high stakes for the younger grades this weekend. The Under-19 competition will not yet move to knockouts; instead U19 teams will continue with round-robin fixtures as they seek to finalise standings.

The U15 schedule opens at Govind Park with an 8.30am kickoff between Ba Pro Dragons and Ra High Roosters. At the Xavier Grounds, Xavier College Bulldogs face SVSS Cowboys at 8.30am, followed by SMC Knights versus Ba Methodist Saints at 9.31am, and Tavua College Eels against CCL Titans at 10.42am.

U17 quarter-final fixtures are spread between the two venues. At Govind Park, Ba Pro meet Balata College at 9.31am, SMC Knights play DAV Panthers at 10.42am, and Drasa Rams take on Ba Methodist Saints at 12.03pm. Xavier Grounds will host SVSS Cowboys versus Nakauvadra High School at 11.43am.

The U19 round-robin matches slated for the card include a 1.14pm clash at Govind Park between Ra High Roosters and Nasikawa Raiders, followed by Ba Methodist Saints meeting Ba Provincial Dragons at 2.35pm.

Wise’s update confirms the western zone’s calendar with just weeks to go before the national quarter-finals in Suva. The southern zone will also stage its quarter-finals this weekend in Suva, meaning successful western teams will link up with southern qualifiers as the national draw takes shape for April 11.

Organisers have kept the western zone schedule tight to ensure qualifiers are finalised ahead of the national fixtures. With three western teams already through and a high-pressure knockout weekend for the Under-15s and Under-17s, local schools will be vying for the final regional berth and the chance to compete on the national stage in Suva.
