Civil society organizations from the Pacific are urging the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) leaders to make West Papua a focal point of discussion at their upcoming meeting in Honiara. An open letter issued by these groups points to the longstanding concerns about human rights violations in the region since its annexation by Indonesia, calling for a fresh and decisive approach from the Forum leaders.

For almost two decades, Pacific communiqués have highlighted these concerns, but the civil society organizations stress that it’s time to transition from words to action, especially as the 2025 PIF Leaders’ Meeting looms near. The letter paints a grim picture of the dire humanitarian and human rights situation, marked by widespread intimidation, service disruptions, and displacement, affecting over 100,000 people.

Among the organizations making this appeal are the Pacific Conference of Churches, the Pacific Network on Globalisation, Papuan faith groups, and media organizations. They underscore the responsibility of Pacific nations to address this critical issue, which they argue is not just a remote problem but a pressing Pacific challenge.

The letter outlines several key recommendations, including:
1. Independent scrutiny, such as inviting an OHCHR visit and initiating a PIF fact-finding mission, alongside a civil-society-led “People’s Mission” to amplify West Papuan voices.
2. A needs-based humanitarian response to deliver aid and protection to displaced communities, particularly those taking refuge in Papua New Guinea, while supporting local responders.
3. Mediation efforts using regional good offices, emphasizing women-led initiatives to uphold civilian protections under the Geneva Conventions and ensure unimpeded humanitarian access.

Each Pacific delegation will receive a copy of the letter, urging them to act collectively to protect and promote human rights in West Papua. This call for action reflects a broader regional and global push for justice and human rights, highlighting the vital role of the Pacific Islands Forum in advocating for peaceful resolutions and the dignity of affected communities. The urgency of this advocacy stems from the ongoing crises in West Papua and the broader implications for regional peace and stability. Advocates hope that establishing a platform for dialogue and compassion can pave the way for meaningful change.
