Weightlifting Fiji celebrated a remarkable achievement by securing three prestigious awards at the Fiji Sports Council (FSC) 2023 sports awards. National coach Henry Elder expressed pride in the dedication and performance of the athletes, reflecting on their successful medal haul at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship.

Elder acknowledged the vital role of government support in facilitating their successes, noting that financial backing helps the federation provide athletes with essential resources. He emphasized the necessity for enhanced facilities, advanced equipment, and specialized assistance to boost their performance further. Additionally, Elder stressed the importance of a robust medical support system to ensure athletes’ well-being.

He highlighted the federation’s commitment to discovering talent across various provinces, with initiatives from the Fiji National Sports Commission supporting outreach programs that have already yielded promising new athletes.

Looking ahead, Elder is optimistic about Weightlifting Fiji’s prospects at the 2026 Commonwealth Games. Preparation is already underway, with potential medal contenders being identified. To achieve greater success in the future, he believes the sport needs to expand its participant base and increase financial resources.

At the FSC awards ceremony, Taniela Rainibogi earned the title of Sportsman of the Year, while Miriama Taletawa was named Sportswoman of the Year. Nehemiah Elder was recognized as the young male athlete of the year.

This success not only showcases the talent and hard work of Weightlifting Fiji but also highlights the importance of community support and investment in sports development. As the federation moves toward future competitions, there is a hopeful outlook for continued growth and achievement.

Overall, the dedication and potential seen in Weightlifting Fiji serve as an inspiring reminder of what can be accomplished with hard work, support, and commitment to nurturing talent across the nation.
