A tragic accident occurred on the Kings Road in Nadaro, Tailevu, resulting in two fatalities and leaving five others hospitalized. The incident involved a collision between two vehicles at around eight last night. A 27-year-old farmer from Nadi, along with two passengers, was traveling towards Korovou when he allegedly lost control, veered into the opposite lane, and collided head-on with a vehicle driven by a 48-year-old man carrying three female passengers.

The 27-year-old driver succumbed to his injuries at the scene, while the 48-year-old was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Nausori Health Center. The surviving passengers from the first vehicle are being treated at the Nausori Health Center and are reportedly stable. Meanwhile, the three passengers from the second vehicle are in serious condition at the CWM Hospital in Suva.

This unfortunate event recalls another tragic incident in Nadi on the same day, where two individuals died in a similar vehicle accident on Wailoaloa Road, marking a series of road tragedies this weekend. The Nadi crash was associated with speeding and alcohol, as preliminary investigations suggested. Director of Traffic, Senior Superintendent of Police Mitieli Divuana emphasized the persistent issue of road safety and the need to adhere to traffic regulations to prevent further loss of life.

Investigations into both incidents are ongoing, and authorities continue to stress the importance of safe driving practices. Despite these unfortunate events, recent statistics indicate a decrease in the overall road death toll compared to previous years, signifying potential progress from enhanced road safety campaigns. The tragic occurrences over the weekend underscore the urgent need for continued efforts to promote road safety and prevent future incidents.
