Women are often the most affected by irregular and disrupted water supplies, as highlighted by Lusiana Buli, a 60-year-old resident of Muanaira Village in Rewa. She expresses concern for her sister-in-law, who takes on the burden of household chores and water collection during the night due to inadequate water pressure during the day. Buli describes how this routine has caused distress, especially since both she and her sister have disabilities that limit their ability to assist.

The situation for many families is challenging, notably when the men in their households are unaware of the sacrifices made by women to maintain daily life. “I’ve watched my sister-in-law’s relentless efforts for years and it’s heartbreaking to feel helpless in supporting her,” Buli said.

Fortunately, there is hope on the horizon. Recently, she and 21 other individuals with disabilities were selected to benefit from a rainwater harvesting initiative aimed at enhancing water accessibility in their community. The installation of a water tank, planned for June, promises a brighter future, alleviating the need for early morning and late-night water gatherings.

Beyond the immediate physical toll, Buli also raises concerns about rising water bills, stating that sometimes her costs exceed $100, which is particularly burdensome for those without a steady income. She calls for understanding and support from authorities regarding the financial implications of water supply issues for vulnerable groups like hers.

Buli’s situation resonates with broader challenges experienced in Fiji, where many communities, including those in the regions of Nadroga and recent efforts in Kumi and Vusama, are struggling to secure consistent access to clean water. Initiatives like the installation of water tanks not only address immediate shortages but also enhance quality of life and health standards for vulnerable populations.

These efforts reflect a collaborative approach towards community needs, emphasizing the importance of proactive measures in ensuring reliable water access. Buli’s story is a testament to the resilience of individuals faced with adversity, and it highlights the significant impact that community support initiatives can have in crafting a more sustainable future.
