The Minister for Public Works, Ro Filipe Tuisawau, has outlined the government’s strategic plans to tackle the ongoing water supply issues affecting the Suva to Nausori corridor, particularly in the areas of Tamavua, Khalsa, Sakoca, and Lami. Acknowledging the public’s frustration with the persistent disruptions in service, Tuisawau called for patience and support as essential infrastructure projects are initiated.
“The current state of water supply in Suva, Lami, and Tacirua is marked by inconsistency and chaos. However, significant progress is being made towards long-term solutions,” he assured. Tuisawau is committed to resolving these water supply challenges before his term concludes in December 2026, aiming to enhance trust and reliability in the water system for both residents and businesses.
The government has initiated several immediate measures to alleviate the water crisis, which includes improving infrastructure and implementing a performance-based strategy aimed at reducing non-revenue water, which is a major contributor to the significant water loss—approximately 47%—currently being experienced in the Suva-Nausori corridor.
Upcoming initiatives include the $40 million Viria Water Treatment Plant, expected to supply an additional 40 million liters of water daily to meet the rising demand in the area. Furthermore, the Princes Road Water Infrastructure Project plans to replace traditional pumping systems with a gravity-fed mechanism, significantly improving service reliability during high turbidity events that complicate water supply restoration.
Officials are optimistic about these developments, as they not only aim to alleviate existing shortages but also prepare for the anticipated population growth within the region. The investment in these infrastructure upgrades signifies a strong commitment from the government to secure access to safe, clean water for communities far into the future.
Despite residents expressing their frustrations—especially during heavy rainfall, which has paradoxically not improved water supplies—the government’s proactive initiatives and forthcoming project completions are generating renewed hope among the community. As these challenges are addressed, the effort reflects a positive commitment to enhancing the quality of life for residents throughout the Suva-Nausori corridor.
