The Tamavua Water Treatment Plant is currently experiencing operational difficulties, as it was originally built to process 60 million liters per day (MLD). However, due to the rising demand from the Suva-Nausori corridor, it now needs to function at 75 MLD. Compounding these challenges, the water source has been affected by high turbidity levels, especially following heavy rain, which has led to unreliable water supply for many residents.

Minister for Infrastructure Ro Filipe Tuisawau recently visited the facility to understand how elevated turbidity, caused by sediment and organic matter, hinders the treatment process. According to Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) officials, this situation necessitates higher chemical dosages and results in frequent blockages in the intake systems, exacerbating the disruptions in water flow and diminishing overall production capacity.

In response to these operational hurdles, WAF is developing a robust strategy to improve the resiliency of the water supply infrastructure. This initiative includes short, medium, and long-term measures to address current deficiencies. Past efforts to manage water quality have been reinforced, as variability in water availability continues to be an issue during heavy rain events, particularly in high-turbidity areas of the Suva-Nausori corridor.

Looking ahead, there are plans for significant upgrades to the Tamavua facility, as well as the construction of a new plant aimed at adding an additional 40 MLD to the water system. These improvements, supported by government backing, seek to resolve persistent water supply challenges and enhance service delivery during critical weather events.

This proactive approach, along with community engagement, symbolizes a hopeful future for ensuring a stable and reliable water supply for residents affected by these recent difficulties. The ongoing infrastructure enhancements will not only tackle immediate concerns but also lay the groundwork for sustainable water management solutions in the region.
