Concerns raised by the International Women’s Association regarding a water leak at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital Antenatal Clinic have led to prompt action from the Ministry of Health and Medical Services. Judy Compain, the Association’s President, highlighted the leak, emphasizing its implications for patient safety and the effectiveness of services provided.
The Ministry confirmed that the leak was identified recently and that immediate measures were implemented by hospital management to investigate and address the issue. An initial inspection by the hospital’s maintenance team, directed by the Medical Superintendent, traced the source of the leak to an old drainage pipe that had been sealed during previous renovations of the maternity washrooms. Over time, the integrity of the seal weakened, leading to the current leakage.
Fortunately, repairs to the damaged pipe have been successfully completed, and the affected area has been cleaned and restored to ensure safety. The Ministry reassured the public that the antenatal clinic is now fully operational and capable of welcoming patients.
In light of the incident, Health Minister Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu has initiated a dual approach. This plan includes a comprehensive investigation to validate the initial findings and to explore long-term solutions. Additionally, any upcoming renovation work by the contractors involved has been temporarily halted, pending the investigation’s results.
The Ministry of Health reaffirmed its dedication to patient safety and the enhancement of health infrastructure throughout the nation. It expressed gratitude towards the public and partner organizations for their vigilance while also apologizing for any disruptions experienced by staff and patients. The Colonial War Memorial Hospital Antenatal Clinic remains committed to providing quality care for mothers and expectant mothers, emphasizing their well-being as a priority.
