A recent special audit investigating Walesi Fiji’s finances from 2015 to 2022 revealed significant issues, including serious mismanagement and potential legal violations. Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica announced that the findings, which indicate several anomalies and alleged misappropriation of public funds, will be forwarded to the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) for further investigation.

Kamikamica emphasized that the government is committed to ensuring accountability and will vigorously pursue any evidence of misconduct, including abuse of office or fraudulent activities. He outlined several strategies aimed at enhancing oversight and transparency in the company’s operations going forward.

The measures announced include strict adherence to transparent tendering processes for future procurements and a comprehensive review of encryption policies to provide genuine Free-to-Air access for all Fijians, without reliance on proprietary devices. Kamikamica also mentioned the need to expedite licensing and frequency registrations for Walesi, in line with established practices to ensure crucial services remain uninterrupted.

To boost efficiency and transparency, the government plans to introduce a monitoring and evaluation framework, alongside a transparent fee structure for broadcasters and service providers utilizing the Walesi network. The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) will also be involved to ensure fair pricing practices are upheld.

Established in 2015 by the FijiFirst government, Walesi Fiji has been tasked with managing the Digital Television Broadcasting platform as part of broader digital initiatives aligning with the government’s objectives.

In summary, while the findings from the audit may raise concerns,
the government’s proactive approach promises a commitment to reform and accountability. This could ultimately lead to improved management practices and enhanced services for Fijians moving forward.
