A recent audit into the finances of Walesi Fiji from 2015 to 2022 has revealed serious issues, including potential legal breaches, severe mismanagement, and waste of public funds. Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica announced that the findings of the audit will be forwarded to the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) for further investigation and possible legal action.

Kamikamica emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing any evidence of misconduct such as abuse of office, misrepresentation, or fraudulent activities, stating that those responsible will face the full force of the law.

To enhance accountability and oversight of Walesi Fiji’s operations, Kamikamica outlined several strategies that will be put into place. These include:

– Implementing a strict transparent tendering process for future procurements.
– Reviewing encryption policies to ensure that all citizens can access Free-to-Air services without requiring proprietary devices.
– Swiftly expediting the licensing process to align Walesi with best practices and safeguard essential services.
– Establishing frameworks for monitoring and evaluation to enhance efficiency and promote transparency.
– Introducing a transparent fee structure for broadcasters and service providers utilizing the Walesi network.
– Collaborating with the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) to maintain fair pricing practices.

Walesi Fiji, created in 2015 under the FijiFirst government, is responsible for managing Fiji’s Digital Television Broadcasting platform and related digital initiatives.

This situation highlights the government’s proactive approach to maintaining integrity in public service and reinforces its dedication to ensuring transparency in the management of public resources. These promised reforms could restore public trust and pave the way for better governance in the future.

In summary, while the findings of the audit raise serious concerns, they also present an opportunity for significant improvements in governance and accountability within Walesi Fiji. The focus on transparency and efficiency could lead to positive changes that benefit the people of Fiji.
