A 26-year-old waitress has been charged after allegedly offering alcohol to her nearly two-year-old nephew and posting an image of the child holding a glass of beer on social media. The incident transpired during a drinking party in a village located in Tailevu. The police arrested her on January 25, 2025, where she was interviewed and subsequently released, but she now faces one count of Giving Intoxicating or Spirituous Liquor to Children, as stipulated under Section 59 of the Juveniles Act 1973.
Authorities have reiterated that exposing minors to such dangerous substances carries serious legal consequences, highlighting the critical role adults play in ensuring the safety and welfare of children. The woman is currently in police custody and is expected to appear before the Nausori Magistrates Court later today.
This case has raised significant alarm among community leaders and child protection advocates. The Fiji Police Force and the Ministry for Women, Children, and Social Protection are reinforcing the need for responsible adult behavior and vigilance in safeguarding minors against harmful situations, including exposure to alcohol. Previous incidents have led to similar warnings, emphasizing that adults must act as protectors, not perpetrators of harm.
The Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran, expressed deep concern regarding the incident, describing it as a violation of children’s rights and the Child Protection Act 2024. She has called upon the community to report any concerning behavior rather than sharing harmful content online, highlighting the collective responsibility in protecting children’s welfare.
While this situation raises significant concerns, it also provides an opportunity for community education around the effects of alcohol and the importance of responsible supervision of children. It is a poignant reminder that by fostering open communication about alcohol and its risks within families and communities, a safer environment can be cultivated for children in Fiji. The hope lies in transforming these distressing incidents into educational moments that will ultimately contribute to the well-being of future generations.
