FIJI Outrigger has officially opened registrations for the much-anticipated Wai Tui International, set to take place from April 3–6, 2026, at Wailoaloa Beach in Nadi. This regatta marks a significant return after 14 years, re-establishing itself as a highlight on Fiji’s paddling calendar.
The event was originally founded by the late Colin Philp, a passionate advocate for paddling, sailing, and environmental stewardship. This year’s regatta aims to honor his legacy while promoting a spirit of connection, competition, and cultural pride that Philp championed throughout his life.
There has been a wave of international interest, with Fiji Outrigger receiving hundreds of inquiries from paddlers across the Pacific region and beyond, including the Solomon Islands, Australia, Wallis & Futuna, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, the United States, Samoa, and various clubs within Fiji. This enthusiasm is coinciding with a surge in the popularity of paddling in the region, fueled by Fiji’s impressive performances at the 2025 IVF World Distance Championships in Brazil and the 2025 Pacific Mini Games in Palau.
Paddlers can register individually, including both V6 crew members and solo V1 paddlers, through the registration portal at www.ticketmax.com.fj/WTI26. The registration period will close on March 3, 2026. The event’s program will feature a robust array of competitions, including V1 and V6 marathons and sprints across Junior, Open, and Masters divisions. Canoe hire for the marathon events will also be available, with proceeds directed toward upgrades for local club equipment.
Over the Easter weekend, competitors will participate in various events, including V6 Marathons (16km & 24km), V6 Sprints (500m, 1000m, 1500m), V1 Sprints (500m), and V1 Marathons (12km). Daily medal presentations and an after-party celebration will enhance the competitive atmosphere. Every participant will receive a Wai Tui International pack, which includes a race shirt required for marathon events.
The regatta will take place at the picturesque Wailoaloa Beach, home to the Nadi Bay Canoe Club and a lively hub for both locals and visitors. The area boasts numerous accommodations, dining, and transportation options, making it an ideal location for teams traveling from overseas.
Supported by the Fiji National Sports Commission and local sponsors, the Wai Tui International aims not only to highlight Fiji’s rich paddling heritage but also to foster regional collaboration and increase local sports tourism. Fiji Outrigger President Loretta St Julian Ooms expressed excitement about the event, stating, “The response so far has been incredible, and we look forward to hosting athletes from across the Pacific and beyond as we honor Colin Philp’s legacy and celebrate how far the sport has come.”
This revitalized regatta promises to be a thrilling event that will bring paddlers together to compete, connect, and celebrate the vibrant culture of Fiji while promoting environmental consciousness and community spirit.
