Adoni Cakacaka has achieved a remarkable feat by clinching first place in the Vulaga Camakau Canoe Race, which took place over the weekend on Vulaga Island in the Lau Group. This race, last held in 2011, marked a highly anticipated return after a 15-year hiatus, renewing interest and excitement in traditional canoe racing.

Cakacaka expressed his exhilaration at participating in the revival of this cultural event, emphasizing its significance in preserving the vital knowledge of traditional canoe sailing. “My participation here today is not new to me; I also took part in the last race. I’m also thankful for having the event here at Muanaicake and Muanaira. I am not new to the place, and I am familiar with the wind,” he stated, reflecting on his deep connection to the surroundings.

Despite his previous experience, Cakacaka acknowledged the challenge of securing victory, commending the talent and competitive spirit displayed by his fellow racers. The event not only celebrates athletic prowess but also serves as a means of cultural preservation, providing a platform for future generations to connect with their heritage.

The successful return of the Vulaga Camakau Canoe Race serves as a reminder of the rich traditions within the Lau Group, highlighting the community’s dedication to embracing and maintaining their cultural significance.
