Vukalokalo Set for Super Rugby Debut: Can Drua Upset the Blues?

Sailosi Vukalokalo, the young lock from Suva, is set to make his much-anticipated Super Rugby Pacific debut with the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua this Friday, as he has been named on the bench for their Round 13 match against the reigning champions, the Blues. This match marks a significant return for Vukalokalo, who has been sidelined due to injury but is now ready to bolster the team’s second-row options.

Head Coach Glen Jackson has retained much of the squad that achieved a remarkable victory against the Queensland Reds last weekend. However, the lineup has been adjusted due to the injury of standout flanker Etonia Waqa, who will be missed, allowing Josefa Tamani to step into the starting position at blindside flanker. Vukalokalo’s presence on the bench could provide the Drua with additional depth and energy as they face a formidable opponent.

The starting forward pack will feature Haereiti Hetet at loosehead prop, Zuriel Togiatama at hooker, and captain Mesake Doge at tighthead. The locking duo of Mesake Vocevoce and Isoa Nasilasila will remain intact, while the loose forwards include Tamani, Isoa Tuwai, and Kitione Salawa. In the halves, Simione Kuruvoli and Kemu Valetini will maintain their partnership, and the back three consists of Taniela Rakuro and Ponipate Loganimasi on the wings, with Selestino Ravutaumada shifting to fullback. In the midfield, Inia Tabuavou and Vuate Karawalevu will control the game’s pace.

The bench offers extensive cover with Tevita Ikanivere, Peni Ravai, and Samuela Tawake providing front-row depth, along with Elia Canakaivata covering the loose forwards. This strategic line-up and the inclusion of Vukalokalo signify a blend of experience and emerging talent, fostering optimism among fans that the Drua can continue their upward trajectory.

The match is scheduled to kick off at 7:05 PM at HFC Bank Stadium and will be broadcast live on FBC Sports. With the Drua’s recent positive momentum and the return of key players, fans are hopeful that this matchup against the Blues could lead to another thrilling performance and possibly a significant victory. The combination of youth and experience in the team reflects a forward-looking strategy as they aim to solidify their position in the competition.
