AJ Pallets Ba River, the reigning under-21 champions from Votua village in Ba, demonstrated their power and determination on the first day of the competition, reaffirming their status as the team to beat.
They began their campaign decisively with a 12-0 victory over Midland, followed by an impressive 31-5 win against Namara, clearly indicating their ambitions for the tournament.
Coach Mikaele Nawaikada expressed pride in the team’s performance but also recognized the challenges that come with being title holders.
“Although we started off slowly, I’m pleased that the boys delivered a strong performance. It’s not easy when you’re the target, but they worked hard and adhered to the game plan,” he stated.
With the championship title at stake, Nawaikada emphasized the need for the team to remain vigilant and not become complacent.
“Every team is aiming to defeat us, so we must be sharper in our upcoming matches. We’re taking it one game at a time, but the players are eager to hold onto this trophy,” he remarked.
In addition to their outstanding gameplay, the team has received accolades for their discipline and teamwork, qualities that Nawaikada believes will aid them in facing tougher challenges down the line.
“It’s all about preparation and the right mindset. We have a long journey ahead, but if the boys continue to play like this, we’ll be in a great position,” he added.
Their next pool match will be pivotal as they aim to secure a place in the knockout stages and continue their quest to defend the championship title.
