Beyond the headline

Paula Vonolagi delivered a dramatic finish to his school athletics career on Wednesday, claiming the senior boys 200m title at the Coca‑Cola Games Suva Zone Two meet for Suva Grammar School — his second gold of the competition after winning the meet’s blue ribbon event on Tuesday. Vonolagi battled through a recent hamstring injury and an agonising moment mid‑race to secure the victory, dedicating the win to his faith as he bids farewell to competing for the Grammar.

The race unfolded as a tight duel with rivals from Marist Brothers High School pressing him through the bend, but Vonolagi emerged fastest down the home straight to cross the line first. He admitted afterwards that the finish did not come easily: “I was almost done at that 50‑metre mark, just to push myself,” he told Times Sport, thanking “the Lord Almighty” for the strength to complete the race. He also confirmed this meet marked his final appearance representing Suva Grammar.

Vonolagi said the hamstring he injured earlier in the season nearly cost him the meet, but timely rehabilitation allowed him to return to form. He revealed that off‑season training, which began in December, was crucial to regaining his fitness and competitive edge. Those efforts paid dividends across the first two days of the Suva Zone Two programme, where he first took the blue ribbon event on Tuesday before adding the 200m crown on Wednesday.

Suva Grammar’s preparations for the zone meet were far from ideal: the school had only one week to ready its athletes following an interhouse competition. Despite the compressed schedule, Vonolagi and his teammates left “no stones unturned,” he said, as staff worked to get competitors race‑ready in a short window. His success under those constraints highlights both individual resolve and a concerted team effort behind the scenes.

The two victories cap a resilient comeback for Vonolagi and provide a high note for Suva Grammar’s athletics contingent at Zone Two. With the senior sprinter stepping away from school competition, coaches and teammates will be looking to build on his performances and fill the void he leaves in the sprints squad.

Vonolagi’s double gold run — and the manner in which he secured the 200m despite physical pain and a testing schedule — was the defining story of the early stages of the Suva Zone Two Coca‑Cola Games meet. His comments after both races framed the wins as the culmination of months of rehabilitation and preparation, and as a personal farewell to school athletics.
