The Matasawalevu Volleyball tournament officially commenced yesterday in Naibita, Wainibuka, Tailevu, with the aim of engaging and involving youth during the festive season. The opening day featured a competitive men’s category, showcasing 14 teams, while the women’s competition is scheduled to begin on the final day of the tournament.
Jerry Cakau, the tournament director, expressed enthusiasm regarding day one’s turnout, highlighting the participation of teams from various regions, including Nadi, Suva, Wainibuka, Rakiraki, and Tailevu. The event is generously sponsored by the Matasawalevu family, who have promised awards for participating teams.
Cakau emphasized the tournament’s goal of promoting volleyball in rural areas and fostering a competitive spirit among local youth. He stated, “The main aim of the competition is to promote Volleyball competitions in the rural areas, and also, we want to promote Volleyball at the grassroots level.” He acknowledged that while volleyball is widely played in these regions, creating a competitive environment helps cultivate talent among the community’s youth.
The inclusion of national players and former athletes heightens the competitive nature of the tournament, inspiring younger participants and showcasing skill and talent. Cakau remarked, “It gives a different level of competition for all. We are also thankful to see national players and former national players also taking part.”
Considering the festive atmosphere, Cakau mentioned that part of the tournament’s mission is to combat crime during this season, as the organizers aim to provide an entertaining and safe alternative to potential social issues. He encourages local youths to come and enjoy the sport, reinforcing the positive aspects of community engagement.
As the tournament heads towards its final day, organizers are hopeful for increased community support, inviting everyone to attend, cheer for their teams, and celebrate the spirit of volleyball and togetherness.
