A recent dialogue between government ministers and landowners aimed to enhance economic development in provinces and ensure effective communication with local communities. Vitalina Duvuduvukula from Navunikabi in Namosi emphasized the importance of such discussions for the preservation of natural resources.

“For too long, we have struggled to make our voices heard,” Ms. Duvuduvukula noted. She expressed satisfaction with the concerns raised during the meeting, stating that while they desire development, it must follow proper communication protocols. She highlighted that government agreements with investors often lead to immediate benefits but result in long-term challenges for the community.

“There needs to be better consultations with the villagers,” she insisted. The dialogue featured Trade Minister Manoa Kamikamica and Minister for iTaukei Affairs Ifereimi Vasu. Another landowner from Namosi, Mareta Nayadi, remarked on the disconnect between government investment efforts and the actual development needs for women and children in the area.

Archbishop Peter Loy Chong, head of the Catholic Church in Fiji, echoed the call for genuine people-centered development. Minister Vasu described the dialogue as a crucial step toward providing a platform for landowners to voice their concerns, aiming to improve communication.

He pointed out that early consultations can help identify potential issues, allowing for proactive solutions beneficial to all parties. “Landowners often invest in the long-term health of their land, and their involvement can drive sustainable practices and conservation efforts,” Mr. Vasu concluded.
