The Fiji Council of Social Services (FCOSS) has emphasized the importance of the National Dialogue on Social Cohesion in addressing grassroots issues and creating a cohesive national framework for peacebuilding efforts across the country. This initiative, dubbed the National Dialogue on Pathways to Peace, launched yesterday at the Pasifika Community University.

In her address, FCOSS Executive Director Vani Catanasiga highlighted that the dialogue aims to unify recommendations collected from community representatives across Fiji’s four divisions, thereby amplifying local voices in national policy formation. She expressed optimism that the outcomes of the discussions will significantly influence national policies and contribute to the endeavors of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

Catanasiga explained that participants will collaboratively identify barriers to reconciliation and the causes of social division throughout the divisions. The goal is to devise evidence-based, sustainable solutions for peacebuilding. FCOSS aims to produce at least five actionable recommendations for consideration by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

In conjunction with the dialogue, the Women’s Lololo Market showcased women micro-entrepreneurs from various divisions, offering an array of handicrafts, jewelry, printed materials, and delicious food products. This market is a collaborative effort between Pasifika Communities University and FCOSS as part of the “ReStorying Pasifika Gender for Transformative Leadership for Justice” project, commonly known as the Pasifika Gender project.

FCOSS National President Sepesa Rasili noted that the Lololo Market provides an excellent opportunity for individuals seeking unique Christmas gifts or wanting to enjoy freshly prepared local meals, all while supporting women-led businesses in their communities. This initiative not only fosters economic growth but also promotes social cohesion through the empowerment of women entrepreneurs. With these combined efforts, FCOSS aims to strengthen community ties and enhance overall social harmony in Fiji.
