Residents of Vuniniudrovu in Naitasiri have demanded a response from the Government within seven days regarding their request for $10 million in compensation. This demand stems from grievances related to pollution of the Waimanu River, which they allege is caused by waste discharged from the Waila Treatment Plant.
The villagers voiced their concerns during a protest outside the plant in Nausori, where approximately 100 people held banners reading messages such as “Please do not pollute our fishing grounds.” Other placards highlighted serious health risks, with statements like “We are bathing and drinking pure chlorine” and “your chemicals are killing the innocent natives of Fiji.”
Community spokesperson Ratu Meli Tunisau articulated the impact of the pollution on local livelihoods, emphasizing that many villagers rely on the river for fishing to support their families. The contamination has reportedly led to significant financial difficulties for the community.
Despite previously reaching out to the Public Works Department for assistance, the villagers feel that their grievances have not been adequately addressed. Ratu Meli warned that if the government does not engage in dialogue, they might pursue legal action to compel the closure of the treatment plant, which could jeopardize water supplies to the broader Suva area.
The villagers also expressed serious health concerns, noting a rise in skin diseases among both children and adults who come into contact with the river water. They have documented evidence of these health issues in correspondence to the Ministry of Infrastructure.
