Motorists are being warned against the creation of Viber groups intended to share the locations of police traffic checkpoints and speed radars—a practice that aims to bypass law enforcement efforts for road safety. Superintendent of Police (SP) Eroni Soqosoqo, the Acting Divisional Police Commander for the Northern region, stated that such groups compromise police operations and significantly heighten risks on the roads.

SP Soqosoqo highlighted that drivers who use these alerts tend to reduce their speed near checkpoints but often accelerate once they are past, which can lead to accidents. He stressed that this behavior not only undermines police efforts but also results in accountability for those who participate in these activities.

As the New Year approaches, police in the Northern Division are ramping up vigilance through foot patrols and road operations to enhance public safety. In tandem, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) has pointed out that driver fatigue is a significant contributor to road accidents in Fiji. The LTA urges motorists to take regular breaks during long drives and emphasizes the importance of passengers speaking up if they notice signs of fatigue, such as drowsiness or erratic driving.

The LTA promotes a “Stop, Revive, and Survive” approach as a means to decrease accidents and bolster road safety. It is imperative to discourage any actions that interfere with police and LTA operations, as they jeopardize collective efforts to ensure safer roads for all.

In summary, both the police and the LTA are advocating for responsible driving practices and cooperation with law enforcement to maintain safety, particularly during the busy holiday season. By fostering awareness and responsibility among drivers and passengers alike, the community can work together to reduce risks on the road and promote a safer driving environment for everyone.
