The Veiyasana Providers have emerged as the champions of the Fiji Sports Council Under-20 sevens tournament (Suva leg) after a thrilling 12-10 victory over favorites Ca’au on Saturday. The team, led by coach Sireli Bobo, surprised many with their impressive performance against strong competition.
Bobo expressed gratitude for the experience and noted that the team exceeded his expectations. “We assembled a full-strength side just hours before the tournament,” he said. The Veiyasana Providers featured players from various institutions, including Ba River, the High-Performance Unit, Queen Victoria School, and Nabua.
The formation of this team was driven by the desire to provide opportunities to players who otherwise may not have had the chance to compete. “We came here with a goal, and that is to win. Slaying the giants is what this team is known for, and I believe we did just that,” Bobo stated.
Throughout the competition, Veiyasana Providers showcased their growing synergy, overcoming QVSOB in the quarterfinals with a narrow 14-12 win and defeating Village Boys 12-7 in a tense semifinal. Bobo believes the tournament serves as an essential platform for young players to display their talent and gain vital exposure, while also highlighting the value of participation from other U20 teams.
Looking ahead, Bobo anticipates an even larger competition next year, promising more opportunities for young athletes to shine.
In addition to the main event, the tournament also produced a series of other exciting finals, including the Men’s U20 Shield Final where Lami Cavaliers defeated Untouched Fiji 10-0, and the Women’s U20 Main Final won by Vatutalei, beating Sinukakala Amazon 10-5.
This tournament not only showcases the potential of young athletes but also emphasizes the importance of perseverance and teamwork in achieving success. With continued support and opportunities, these rising stars have the chance to shine even brighter in the future.
