Vatulele, a picturesque island off Fiji’s Coral Coast, is renowned for its endemic red prawns and intricate masi designs that contribute to the vibrant tapestry of iTaukei culture. Recently, it hosted the Mick’s Fiji Tours & Transfers Vatulele 7s, a two-day rugby tournament held from December 19 to 20 at the Vatulele District School ground in Ekubu, the village known for being the traditional seat of the Taukei na Vunisa Levu, Ratu Joji Toge.

This year’s Vatulele 7s marked its third consecutive year in its home location, a change from past years when it was held in various venues. The event provided an exciting opportunity for local residents to enjoy high-quality rugby.

The tournament was initiated by Ekubu villagers Vilive Qionikorolevu and Asesela Naborisi, who aimed to give back to their community. Their current focus is on constructing a new walkway for the district school.

Traveling to Vatulele involves a rugged journey by fiberglass boat from Korolevu landing, marked by choppy waters and fading network reception, allowing visitors a chance to disconnect from urban life. Upon arrival, the warm hospitality of the locals, including Naborisi’s family, provided an inviting welcome.

The tournament kicked off under sunny skies, although some teams were unable to participate, leading to quicker match progressions. The competitive spirit escalated as teams aimed for a spot in the quarter-finals, with the final day building anticipation and showcasing remarkable skill.

On December 20, the TEMC Warriors emerged victorious, defeating the Gold Coast Senibiau 34-5 in a thrilling final. Their disciplined approach to the game was credited for their success. Other categories saw Naboutini claim the shield trophy and Hydro Bukuya secure the bowl title, adding to the excitement of the tournament.

The event’s success was attributed to the unwavering support from sponsors, with an announcement of continued sponsorship for the upcoming year. The experience serves as a reminder to cherish the simple things in life that are often overlooked in urban environments, fostering a sense of community and deeper connections among attendees.

Reflecting on the journey, the pleasant farewell from the villagers and the calm seas during departure offered a hopeful conclusion to this vibrant cultural event. The Vatulele 7s, set to return in August next year, emphasizes the community spirit of coming together to support one another, illustrating that it indeed takes a village to nurture future generations.
