Four Ecuadorians involved in the recent Vatia cocaine bust have been confirmed not to be Fijian nationals. Aliki Salusalu, the Permanent Secretary for Immigration, made this clarification in response to misleading social media reports that suggested the individuals were holders of Fijian passports.
Salusalu emphasized that the accused are valid holders of Ecuadorian passports, asserting, “Contrary to earlier social media reports, the individuals concerned do not hold Fijian passports, nor are they Fijian nationals.” This statement aims to rectify any confusion surrounding the nationality and travel documents of the suspects.
Additionally, Salusalu affirmed that the Ministry of Immigration is fully cooperating with the ongoing police investigation, offering all necessary support to facilitate the inquiry. As the investigation progresses, the four Ecuadorian nationals continue to remain in police custody.
This situation highlights the importance of accurate information in maintaining public understanding and preventing the spread of misinformation. The authorities are committed to transparency and due process as they navigate the complexities of the case.
