Vanuatu’s Historic Shift: Meet the Sole Female MP Aiming for Ministerial Power

In a landmark development for gender representation in Vanuatu’s political arena, Marie Louise Milne has emerged as the sole female member of Parliament, pursuing a ministerial role in the new government. Milne, who represents the Green Confederation party, emphasizes that including women in pivotal leadership positions is essential for a balanced government that truly reflects the voices of its constituents.

Milne expressed her advocacy, stating, “As the only woman in the Parliament of the Republic of Vanuatu, it would be great to recognize the voices of women.” This plea for inclusivity aligns with wider movements across the Pacific region, where discussions around enhancing women’s political participation are gaining momentum.

Currently, Milne is in the process of assessing her political affiliations, which are crucial in determining her eligibility for a ministerial position. According to Andrew Napuat, Vice President of GJP, Milne’s potential role hinges on her party allegiance. He noted that while there is no immediate pressure for her to decide, the existing parliamentary law allows MPs three months to confirm their political alignment, giving her the opportunity to make a well-informed choice.

Milne’s election is historic, as it marks the first time in 34 years that a woman from Port Vila has been elected to Parliament, following the tenure of Hilda Lini who served from 1987 to the early 1990s. Community leaders, including Chief Roger Tari of the Indigenous Council of Chiefs of Freshwota, have praised Milne’s commitment and impact, particularly in supporting women and youth initiatives within her community.

With the inaugural parliamentary session set for February 11, Milne will join 51 other MPs in critical discussions shaping Vanuatu’s future. Her quest for a ministerial role not only signifies a personal ambition but also amplifies a significant push for gender equality in political domains, embodying hope for a more inclusive democratic process.

The changing landscape of Vanuatu’s politics, coupled with increasing participation of women in leadership, presents a nuanced opportunity for growth and advocacy for gender equality. Milne stands poised to be a pivotal figure as the nation endeavors toward meaningful representation and governance that acknowledges and supports women’s roles in public life.
