Strong Wind Warning for Yasawa, Lau, Kadavu and Lomaiviti as Winds Reach Up to 55 km/h with Heavy Showers Across Fiji (4 May 2026)

Dark storm clouds over Fiji coastline with palm trees, indicating an approaching tropical storm.

A trough of low pressure is lingering over the northern and eastern parts of Fiji while a moderate to strong east to southeast flow affects the rest of the group. A strong wind warning remains in force for the southern Lau group, Yasayasa Moala, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands, the Yasawa, Lau and Lomaiviti groups, the southern and eastern half of Viti Levu (from the Sigatoka coral coast through Suva up to Rakiraki), southern Bua, eastern Macuata, and Cakaudrove including Taveuni and nearby smaller islands. This bulletin was issued from the National Weather Forecasting Centre, Nadi, at 3:30pm on Monday the 4th of May 2026.

Expect east to southeast winds of 35 to 45 km/h, gusting up to 55 km/h at times, in the areas under the strong wind warning. Winds are forecast to ease to moderate to fresh southeast tomorrow. Seas will be rough to very rough in the warned areas, with moderate to rough seas elsewhere. Mariners and those with coastal activities should exercise caution given the hazardous sea state.

Showers and a few thunderstorms are likely at times, particularly over the Lau group, eastern Macuata and Cakaudrove provinces, with isolated heavy falls possible. Cloudy periods with some showers are expected around Suva–Nausori–Korovou–Rakiraki, Serua–Namosi–Naitasiri–Ra–Tailevu and southern Bua, as well as Kadavu and nearby smaller islands. Elsewhere conditions are mostly fine apart from isolated afternoon or evening showers and possible thunderstorms. Localised heavy falls may lead to flash flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas.

Local outlooks: Navua, Suva and Nausori will see east to southeast winds 35–45 km/h, up to 55 km/h at times, easing to moderate to fresh tomorrow. Cloudy periods with some showers and isolated afternoon thunderstorms with heavy falls are expected (Tomorrow: max 29°C, min 21°C; Wednesday outlook: cloudy periods with some showers, min 23°C, max 29°C). Nadi, Lautoka and Ba should remain mainly fine apart from isolated showers and possible thunderstorms (Tomorrow: max 31°C, min 21°C). Tavua and Rakiraki will have breezy east to southeast winds, cloudy periods and isolated thunderstorms (Tomorrow: max 31°C, min 21°C). Labasa, Savusavu and Nabouwalu can expect cloudy periods with some showers and isolated thunderstorms (Labasa Tomorrow: max 31°C, min 22°C; Savusavu/Nabouwalu Tomorrow: max 30°C, min 22°C). Taveuni, the Lau and Lomaiviti groups and Kadavu may see occasional rain with localised heavy falls and isolated thunderstorms; Kadavu’s Tomorrow: max 30°C, min 22°C; Lau/Lomaiviti Tomorrow: max 29°C, min 22°C. Rotuma is affected by the trough with occasional heavy showers and isolated thunderstorms, moderate southeasterly winds and moderate to rough seas (Tomorrow: max 31°C, min 23°C).

The outlook for Wednesday is for cloudy periods with some showers across Serua–Namosi, Navua–Suva–Nausori, Tailevu–Naitasiri–Ra, Cakaudrove, southern Bua, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, the Lau and Lomaiviti groups, and Kadavu; elsewhere will be mostly fine apart from afternoon or evening showers. Given the strong winds, rough seas and potential for localised heavy falls and flash flooding, residents and visitors should take precautions such as avoiding flood-prone areas, exercising care on the roads during heavy showers, and ensuring small craft and loose items are secured.
