A recent report from the Vanuatu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) in conjunction with the Department of Labour (DoL) highlights the dire situation facing local businesses following the December 17 earthquake. Nearly half of the affected businesses indicated they could sustain current employment levels for only 1-2 more months.
As outlined by the Vanuatu Daily News, the VCCI and DoL completed an initial assessment that gathered data from 169 businesses about staffing, relocation actions, and the support needed during recovery. The analysis revealed a significant loss of jobs, with approximately 900 employees laid off, including a staggering 71 percent reduction in the food and beverage sector.
The report emphasized the challenge of reopening the Central Business District (CBD) as a critical issue for recovery efforts. Despite these challenges, VCCI reported that no businesses had permanently closed due to the earthquake, showcasing the determination and ingenuity of the community. VCCI plans to work closely with governmental partners and regional organizations to expedite economic recovery.
Furthermore, the infrastructure and the informal sector have been significantly impacted. Many micro-vendors and informal workers remain unable to operate due to the prolonged CBD closures, revealing a broader economic strain that the initial analysis did not fully capture.
In addition, this latest report complements previous findings on the severe displacement and job losses resulting from the earthquake, which tragically claimed 14 lives, including two children, and displaced nearly 1,500 residents. Recovery is hampered by restricted access to the CBD, with estimates suggesting it may take up to two years for normal operations to resume.
