As Vanuatu begins to restore its internet services following a devastating 7.3 magnitude earthquake on Tuesday, many Fijians have taken to social media to confirm their safety. The earthquake severely damaged the Vodafone network, disrupting essential communications.
Reports indicate that the death toll has risen to 14, with around 200 individuals seeking medical treatment for their injuries. Among the updates, Fijian communications officer Ana Tudrau-Tamani reassured her family and friends on Facebook that she and her colleagues at the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) Secretariat were safe.
In her post, Mrs. Tudrau-Tamani thanked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for their concern and expressed gratitude to everyone who reached out with well wishes. However, she also painted a grim picture of the situation in Vanuatu, highlighting the loss of water, power, and all communication services, with victims still trapped under debris and affected by landslides.
Thomas Bruce, CEO of Vodafone Vanuatu, has encouraged other telecommunications providers to work together to find alternative solutions to restore connectivity, as the earthquake damaged the submarine cable connection in Mele.
Opposition leader Inia Seruiratu has called for regional support to help Vanuatu recover from the disaster, expressing sympathy for the extensive damage and loss experienced by the community. He emphasized that both Fiji and Vanuatu share a strong bond and will work together in solidarity during this challenging time.
Public Service Commission chairperson Luke Rokovada echoed these sentiments, commending the emergency responders and volunteers for their critical assistance. He also expressed confidence in the resilience of the Vanuatu people, stating that their strength will be crucial in rebuilding and recovering from this calamity.
