The President of Vanuatu, His Excellency Moli Nikenike Vurobaravu Moliunavanua, has officially declared a State of Emergency in response to the significant damage caused by the earthquake that struck on December 17, 2024. The declaration covers the areas most severely affected by the natural disaster.

This action was taken in accordance with the presidential powers outlined in subsection 32 (1) of the Disaster Risk Management Act No. 23 of 2019. The State of Emergency is set to last for a duration of seven days from the date of the declaration.

In light of this situation, it is crucial for the community to come together and support one another. While the challenges ahead may seem daunting, there is also an opportunity for resilience and recovery. The government’s prompt response reflects a commitment to safeguard the health and safety of its citizens during this critical time.

This situation underscores the importance of disaster management and preparedness in island nations like Vanuatu, which are often vulnerable to natural calamities. Through collective efforts and timely interventions, the affected areas can begin the process of healing and rebuilding.
