The community of Vanuabalavu is currently bracing itself for the impacts of Category 2 Tropical Cyclone Rae, which has already begun to affect the area with strong winds that have toppled trees. Villager Mesui Kavulela noted that while there have been no significant damages or flooding, the cyclone’s winds have rendered several roads impassable due to debris.

Preparation efforts have been robust, with evacuation centers activated and local schools closed to ensure the safety of residents. The community’s proactive measures echo the sentiments of previous weather events, where solidarity and preparation proved crucial for safety and resilience.

The Fiji Meteorological Service has reported winds of 95 km/h with gusts reaching up to 130 km/h, and they warn that conditions may worsen, with wind speeds potentially increasing further. Alerts have been issued across many regions, including heavy rain and gale warnings, urging residents to secure their properties and prepare emergency supplies, similar to past experiences during severe weather situations.

This resilience is emblematic of a historical pattern in Fiji, where communities come together in times of crisis. As Cyclone Rae continues its path towards the Lau Group and is forecasted to intensify, the emphasis is on vigilance and mutual support among residents. Underlined by a feeling of hope and collective strength, the community aims to navigate this challenging time by reinforcing their preparedness and demonstrating unity in facing adversity.

Amidst these challenges, the community’s proactive spirit serves as a beacon of hope, showcasing how cooperation can strengthen their ability to weather the impending storm and safeguard their lives and properties.
