Underdogs Vaturova Koroalau High School reach Vanua Shield netball final after 19-15 win over Lelean
Vaturova Koroalau High School’s under-19 netball team from Vanua Levu upset Lelean Memorial School 19-15 to book a place in the Vanua Shield final at the Crest Fiji Secondary School Netball Championship. The victory, built on disciplined defending and composed attacking play, came after the northern side travelled a long distance to Suva for the semi-final.
Team captain Leniana Dibe said the win was a special moment for the squad, highlighting the hard work and weeks of preparation that went into the championship. “First of all, we give back the glory to God for giving us the strength to be able to achieve the win. We thank all our parents and teachers who have been behind the team in our preparation and during this championship. Looking to the finals, I believe we have what it takes to take the Vanua Shield back to Vanua Levu,” she said.
Dibe dedicated the victory to the players’ parents, who have been a pillar of support throughout the tournament. Vaturova Koroalau now face Nasikawa Vision College in the final this afternoon, aiming to cap a remarkable campaign with the trophy.
The team’s run underscores the spirit of resilience and community backing that characterizes Fiji’s secondary school competitions, where journeys from outer islands to the capital are common as schools chase national honours.
