Fijian Drua Development will meet Ba Rugby Union in a curtain‑raiser at Churchill Park in Lautoka on March 14, the club confirmed, with a mixture of experienced internationals and local prospects set to take the field ahead of the Drua’s Super Rugby Pacific home fixture. The match is the latest development in the Drua’s planned double‑header series that aims to give club players exposure to a professional environment while offering fans two competitive games for the price of one.

Coach Nemani Nadolo has named a squad bolstered by several first‑team players and invitational talent, with former France centre Virimi Vakatawa announced as captain of the Development side. Senior hooker Mesulame Dolokoto will make a comeback from injury and is expected to marshal the forwards and provide leadership to the younger contingent. Other seasoned names named in the matchday group include Joseva Tamani, Taniela Rakuro, Inia Tabuavou, Maika Tuitubou, Isikeli Basiyalo and Manasa Mataele.

The selection blends Drua contracted players with emerging club standouts: seven players who have impressed across the domestic club competitions have been invited into the Development squad for the game. Nadolo said the fixture offers a vital bridge between club rugby and the professional level, allowing coaching staff to see how locally based players handle a more intense, structured match environment and giving squad members valuable minutes on the field ahead of the Super Rugby Pacific campaign.

Supporters are being urged to arrive early to catch the curtain‑raiser, which organisers say will add extra value to the matchday and give Ba fans a chance to see both established internationals and homegrown prospects. Vakatawa’s presence in particular is expected to draw additional attention given his profile and international pedigree.

This announcement builds on earlier plans by the Drua to stage curtain‑raiser matches during their opening home fixtures this season. The club has previously said those warm‑up encounters — scheduled across the first three home games — form part of a deliberate pathway to identify and fast‑track talented players from the domestic competitions into the professional environment. Nadolo reiterated that the invited players have been monitored throughout club competitions and that Saturday’s game will be an opportunity for them to “test themselves on a bigger stage” against a seasoned Ba side.

With the Super Rugby Pacific season looming, the match will serve dual purposes: a performance check for fringe and returning players such as Dolokoto and Tamani, and a showcase for the next generation of Fijian talent. The Drua’s integration of club performers into the Development squad underlines the franchise’s continued emphasis on building depth from within Fiji’s strong club system as it prepares for the demands of the campaign.
