USP Students Stage Protest: Demands for Professional Lecturers Rise

Students at the University of the South Pacific organized a large-scale march yesterday to voice their demands for changes in teaching methods. They expressed concerns that many courses are being led by consultants rather than qualified lecturers.

Reports indicate that the protest led to the dismissal of Dr. Tamara Osborne Naikatini.

Among those participating was Semesa Nawasoni, President of the Yasana ko Ba Student Association. He articulated that the strike stemmed from unresolved grievances, claiming that the USP Students Association has been making decisions without adequately consulting the student body.

“The protest occurred because many students feel ignored, particularly regarding their teaching staff,” Nawasoni stated.

He urged the university’s management to appoint qualified teaching professionals and emphasized the need for student feedback to be taken seriously. “All we want is for qualified educators to be placed in their roles, and for our concerns to be treated with respect.”

From the perspective of the I-Taukei Student Association, President Manasa Navara stated he is unaware of any communication breakdown. He asserted that all student grievances directed to him have been addressed. “We have maintained strict communication protocols, so I’m uncertain where the breakdown occurred. I believe I have done everything possible to convey all grievances to the Federal level.”

Additionally, sources confirmed that the student-led protest is likely to continue until a satisfactory resolution is reached by the USP Student Association that benefits both students and staff.
