Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu is urging the Fijian Government to take prompt action to resolve the ongoing dispute between the University of the South Pacific (USP) and two staff unions. In statements made to FijiLive, Seruiratu emphasized that allowing this situation to continue would jeopardize the future of students in the region.

He called for strong leadership to ensure that USP remains a renowned institution that nurtures future leaders of the Pacific Islands and beyond. Additionally, he supported the demands of the Association of USP Staff and the University of the South Pacific Staff Union for Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Pal Ahluwalia to take leave while the ongoing investigations into the dispute take place.

According to Seruiratu, the conflict has now extended into its fifth day, which is particularly concerning as evaluations for students attending USP are imminent. He pointed out that the situation stems from prolonged tensions between USP and its staff, which could have been avoided if the university had addressed workforce grievances earlier.

He criticized USP’s management for framing the strike as an issue not covered under existing contracts, finding the statement troubling. Seruiratu advised that if management is unable to resolve these matters, they should seek assistance from the Council, as it has the authority to appoint the Vice-Chancellor.

He stressed that the education of students must not be compromised further and that the serious allegations from the staff association warrant thorough investigation. He expressed concern that if employment contracts for valuable Pacific Islands academics are indeed not being renewed, it calls for immediate attention from all involved parties.

FijiLive has requested comments from the Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro and USP regarding the situation.
