Staff and students at the University of the South Pacific (USP) gathered at the Laucala Campus’s main administration building yesterday, demanding the USP Council address their persistent concerns around leadership accountability and governance. This demonstration coincided with a crucial two-day council meeting taking place in Auckland, New Zealand, which many find puzzling, considering there is no USP campus in that location.

The protests have highlighted two key issues: the proposed exit package for Vice Chancellor Professor Pal Ahluwalia and the appeal for the reinstatement of suspended Biology Professor Dr. Tamara Osborne-Naikatini. As participants expressed their frustrations, they emphasized that ongoing leadership challenges threaten the reputation of USP as a leading regional institution.

A spokesperson for the Association of the University of the South Pacific Staff (AUSPS) voiced concerns over the lack of responsiveness from the council to previously raised issues. This ongoing unrest has intensified since last year, as staff feel their voices have been overlooked through formal channels.

The AUSPS and supporters gathered to reinforce the urgency of their demands, stressing that leadership issues must be resolved swiftly, echoing sentiments that the ongoing crisis is detrimental not just to staff and students, but to the integrity of the university itself. They expressed hope that the council would finally listen and respond to their calls for change.

The situation reflects a broader struggle faced by educational institutions over governance and accountability. As staff and students unite to express their discontent, it underscores the critical importance of leadership that resonates with the community’s values and needs.

While challenges persist, there is hope that the collective voices of the USP community may stimulate necessary changes, ensuring that both student and staff concerns are prioritized, fostering an environment that supports their educational mission.
