The U.S. Deputy Secretary of State, Christopher Landau, has reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to advancing its economic and security priorities in the Pacific region, despite ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. In a social media statement, Landau emphasized that American diplomacy will continue unabated across the globe, highlighting his recent diplomatic mission to the South Pacific.

From February 26 to March 2, Landau visited Tonga, Fiji, and Samoa, following an investment summit he hosted in Honolulu from February 22 to 24. This summit brought together senior officials from 16 Pacific Islands and territories alongside members of the American private sector.

During his visit to Tonga, Landau engaged with key leaders, including King Tupou VI, Crown Prince Tupouto’a ‘Ulukalala, and Prime Minister Lord Fakafanua, highlighting the historical significance of Tonga’s sovereignty. He expressed enthusiasm about strengthening economic and security cooperation between the two nations and signed an enhanced “ship rider” agreement with Tongan authorities to promote collaboration between the U.S. Coast Guard and local law enforcement.

In Fiji, Landau met with Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka to deepen naval cooperation and economic development ties. A significant outcome of the meeting was the signing of a $12 million Compact Development Funding Agreement with the Fijian government and the Millennium Challenge Corporation, which aims to drive further investment in the region.

In Samoa, Landau held discussions in Apia focused on shared economic and security interests, particularly regarding the close ties with American Samoa. He also signed an Open Skies agreement and reviewed port security operations, emphasizing the importance of international collaboration for regional stability.

These efforts demonstrate the United States’ dedication to bolstering partnerships in the Pacific, fostering economic growth, and promoting security cooperation as vital components of its foreign policy agenda.
