A seven-meter Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat (RHIB) was officially handed over to the Republic of Fiji Navy last week, marking the first of six boats that the United States will donate to strengthen Fiji’s maritime security and disaster response capabilities. The ceremony underscored the growing partnership between the two nations and their mutual commitment to ensuring a secure Pacific region.
The U.S. Embassy in Fiji emphasized the importance of the RHIB in enhancing maritime security. Designed to operate under challenging conditions, the vessel is equipped with advanced navigation, radar, and communication systems. Its capabilities are expected to significantly improve the Fiji Navy’s operational effectiveness in boarding operations, combating transnational crime and illegal fishing, as well as providing essential support during emergencies and natural disasters, especially in light of the current cyclone season.
Additionally, this donation symbolizes a robust collaboration between the United States and Fiji. Earlier this year, members of the Fiji Navy Small Boat Squadron received specialized training from the U.S. Navy as part of a comprehensive program known as the “Total Package Approach,” which integrates equipment delivery with training, maintenance support, and long-term planning.
Eroni Rokisi, the director of policy for the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs, accepted the boat on behalf of the Fiji Navy. The engagement of U.S. Mobile Training Teams is set to continue, further enhancing the Fiji Navy’s small boat seamanship and maintenance skills, thus reinforcing Fiji’s maritime capabilities moving forward.
