Concerns are growing regarding child welfare after a toddler was found wandering alone along Laucala Beach Road in Nasinu. Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew emphasized the seriousness of prioritizing children’s safety in light of this incident. Police responded to the situation after two women discovered the child and took him to a nearby station.
ACP Chew stated that the police are committed to investigating incidents of child neglect thoroughly. Following a post on their official Facebook page appealing for assistance in identifying the child’s parents or guardians, the toddler was successfully reunited with his family.
The Commissioner stressed that cases like these prompt the police to examine elements of negligence, which could lead to legal consequences for the parents or guardians involved. He noted, “This is not the first such case we have encountered,” highlighting previous incidents where children faced serious harm due to lack of supervision, including drownings and accidents.
He urged parents and guardians to remain vigilant as even a moment of inattention can lead to tragic outcomes, reminding everyone of the inherent curiosity and vulnerability of young children.
In a related appeal, Assistant Minister for Children Sashi Kiran urged parents to be proactive about their children’s whereabouts and safety. She referred to a recent tragic incident where a one-year-old boy lost his life after reportedly being struck by a vehicle while he had wandered away unnoticed.
Ms. Kiran acknowledged the challenges faced by nuclear families, especially those in urban areas, but maintained that prioritizing child care is essential to prevent neglect and avoidable tragedies.
