The Environment Ministry of Fiji is collaborating with the Maritime Safety Authority (MSAF) and Fiji Ports Corporation Ltd to mobilize resources necessary for refloating and draining the oils and fuels from the MV Suilven, which sank in Suva Harbour. Recently, efforts by MSAF and Dive Centre (Fiji) Ltd successfully stopped the oil leak from the vessel, which had been a significant environmental concern.

Dr. Sivendra Michael, the permanent secretary of the Ministry, highlighted that the leak originated from the ship’s hull, most likely involving heavy fuel oil or marine diesel oil, both of which could severely harm the marine ecosystem. He emphasized the ministry’s awareness of the risks associated with potential further leaks and stressed the need for swift action to prevent environmental damage.

Despite a court order requiring the ship’s owner to take responsibility for the situation, there have been no actions taken thus far. Dr. Michael reiterated that the laws in Fiji are clear, stipulating that ship owners must uphold their responsibilities in these circumstances. Additionally, the ministry is actively working with a steering committee to tackle the issues posed by other abandoned vessels.

This initiative showcases a dedicated effort from various stakeholders in Fiji to protect the marine environment from the repercussions of maritime incidents. With the ongoing cooperation and commitment to addressing the issue, there is hope for a timely resolution that will mitigate environmental risks and uphold local maritime laws.

In summary, the Environment Ministry is taking proactive steps to manage the environmental challenges posed by the MV Suilven incident, reflecting a broader commitment to marine protection in Fiji.
