The People’s Alliance (PA) party’s National Legal and Disciplinary Sub-Committee is set to meet today to discuss the recent controversy involving former deputy party leader Lynda Tabuya. Her dismissal by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka occurred after an explicit video of her dancing surfaced on social media on Christmas Eve.
Tabuya confirmed that the video is genuine, stating it was intended for her husband, Robert Semaan. However, the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption revealed earlier this year that Tabuya’s marriage to Semaan was legally dissolved in December 2016.
In an update, Prime Minister Rabuka will be participating in the committee meeting via Zoom from Savusavu, where he will clarify the legitimacy of the decision to dismiss Tabuya, who was one of the top Cabinet Ministers in the Coalition Government. Tabuya holds significant influence, having received 11,965 votes in the 2022 General Election, making her the fourth-highest in terms of polling capital.
Mr. Rabuka initiated a disciplinary hearing on Christmas Day after receiving multiple complaints regarding the explicit video. He stated that the committee has 21 days to deliberate and respond to the issue. Additionally, he emphasized that his actions are constitutional and will provide updates on the progress of the case during the meeting.
This situation underscores the complexity and challenges of public life and the scrutiny faced by political figures. As the disciplinary committee convenes, it will be a critical moment for the PA party to demonstrate their commitment to upholding their standards and addressing issues transparently.
Overall, this incident might also serve as a reminder of the importance of personal conduct in public office and could lead to a renewed focus on ethics within political parties, promoting a culture of accountability.
