During the 54 years of Fiji’s independence, numerous political upheavals have emerged, largely attributed to a “culture of convenience,” according to Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu. He highlighted the findings of the National Security and Defence Review (NSDR), which indicated that immunity provisions in the 2013 Constitution fostered a culture of coups, posing challenges for the nation.

Seruiratu expressed that while many believe a new constitution could resolve Fiji’s issues, he contended that this view is misleading. He pointed out that the temptation for political and personal shortcuts has driven individuals and groups to exploit situations for their benefit, often at the expense of soldiers, many of whom have sacrificed their lives.

Describing the current state of politics as deeply troubling, he emphasized the need for significant reform. He referenced the NSDR report which reveals public distrust in military and state institutions, underscoring the importance of recognizing this issue to tackle its root causes.

Seruiratu called for a space where those involved in past political turmoil, including the 2000 events and the 1987 coup, can share their experiences. He insisted that understanding the truth is vital for progress, warning against superficial solutions that ignore underlying problems.

He insisted that discussions on amending the 2013 Constitution should only proceed after the national truth and reconciliation process is completed. According to him, the core of Fiji’s challenges lies not in the legal framework but in the attitudes of those who feel dissatisfied with the democratic process. He cited historical upheavals wherein new constitutions were crafted to shield those responsible from legal consequences.

Seruiratu concluded by advocating for an honest dialogue aimed at fostering understanding within communities. He stressed the importance of this process for the benefit of future generations, urging collective commitment and strong leadership to pave the way for a brighter future.
