Poorly structured business proposals are hindering funding approvals for various projects in iTaukei villages, according to the iTaukei Trust Fund Board (TTFB). The Chief Executive, Aisake Taito, highlighted that many applications are turned down due to incomplete information such as cash flow analyses, price quotations, and detailed cost breakdowns.

Taito emphasized the importance of treating business proposals similarly to loan applications, utilizing the correct templates to fulfill all requirements. He urged villagers to ensure their proposals include essential components, stating, “Always remember, when you prepare any project or business proposal, it should include all the required elements, such as cash flows.” He also encouraged collaboration with provincial offices for additional support in proposal preparation.

In line with the ongoing efforts to enhance business acumen among the iTaukei community, Ifereimi Vasu, the Minister for iTaukei Affairs, indicated that projects should not be rushed and must adhere to high standards. He specifically noted that infrastructures, such as community halls, should meet quality benchmarks comparable to those found in urban areas, discouraging the use of subpar contractors.

Both Taito and Vasu agree on the necessity for greater transparency and accountability in project proposals. Engaging with provincial offices is seen as a key step in avoiding both delays and project redundancy. The emphasis on thorough preparation and strategic planning reflects broader initiatives aimed at fostering entrepreneurship within iTaukei communities, which have historically faced challenges in business ownership.

This is part of a larger commitment to uplift the iTaukei community through improved financial literacy and better business practices, reflecting a hopeful prospect for sustainable development and economic resilience in the future. Enhanced engagement, support, and education could empower iTaukei villagers to create viable business ventures, fostering a more prosperous economic environment.
