The dialogue forum titled “Development in Indonesia: Lessons Learned from Papua and for the Pacific” successfully took place in Suva, Fiji. This significant event focused on the development advancements in the Indonesian province of Papua, showcasing its rich cultural heritage and the tangible progress achieved in this easternmost region of the Indonesian archipelago.
Prominent speakers hailing from Papua shared valuable insights into the social and economic developments within the province. The forum attracted a diverse group of attendees, including church leaders, community representatives, members of the Indonesia Scholarship Fiji Alumni, Fijian students, governmental officials, NGOs based in Fiji, Indonesian students in Fiji, local media professionals, and representatives from the Fiji Indonesia Friendship Association.
Indonesian Ambassador to Fiji, Dupito Simamora, emphasized that the forum’s interactive discussions were designed to encourage thought-provoking dialogues and fresh ideas on sustainable development models that could benefit both Papua and the Fiji islands.
Sokovoli Ordovakavula, a civil engineering expert and President of Indonesia Scholarship Fiji Alumni, highlighted the uniqueness of Indonesia’s development initiatives, particularly in Papua. He encouraged exploration of how these initiatives—especially those implemented in remote regions—could potentially be adapted to support the Fijian government’s efforts in promoting social and economic growth.
Additionally, Serupepeli Udre, the Acting Director for Assets and Infrastructure Services at the Ministry of Education, discussed enhancing the potential for bilateral collaborations between the Indonesian and Fijian governments, laying the groundwork for future projects that align with Fiji’s National development goals.
